Which Bulbs are Best?
Currently the better fixtures use LED, Xenon or Fluorescent bulbs. We have definite reasons not to use halogen bulbs. They have a very short life span of about 2,000 hours and if you touch them during instillation they will burn out even faster. Fluorescent bulbs are ok, but can not be dimmed without the use of special expensive ballasts and dimmers. The bulbs used in these fixtures are Xenon or Fluorescent bulbs and have an average life of 8,000 hours. Xenon bulbs can be dimmed with a standard dimmer. You can also touch LED, Xenon and Fluorescent bulbs without causing them to have early burnout. LED fixtures use the longest life bulb, lasting over 60,000 hours and very low energy consumption.
Where Can They Be Used?
Because of its small size and location (such as above counters) these task lighting fixtures can provide good ambient illumination for a large counter spaces. At night these units can be dimmed and provide good "mood lighting". Task lighting has more options today than in years past. Undercabinet lighting fixtures are used in kitchens, display cases and in under counter applications such as bars, nurse and technical work stations. Other uses include shelf lighting in closets, storage areas and stereo component shelving. Many woodworkers use under cabinet fixtures in custom built cabinets, display cases and shelving.
The hard to install under cabinet light fixtures are a thing of the past. Many of the new styles of fixtures use xenon lamps or LEDs which has made fixtures more module and easier for the average person to install themselves.

Shopping for light fixtures you have most likely noticed how many choices there are. But how do you know which light fixtures to use and does choosing the right light fixture even matter?
Unless you already know what you want, it will be beneficial to give your purchase some extra consideration. Taking into account items like cost, style, light source, ease of bulb replacement, wiring considerations and light fixture placement will help to fit your fixtures specifically to your application.
