FULL SPECTRUM LIGHTING IMPROVES EDUCATION

  1. Reduction in absenteeism.
  2. Reduction in distractions during sustained reading (30 min).
  3. Teacher opinion surveys reflecting a preference for Vita-Lite lighting which enhanced the classroom environment.
The following figure demonstrates the differences in absences with Vita-Lite lighting and standard Cool White lighting.

ABSENCES IN 3RD QUARTER

The effect of full-spectrum Vita-Lite and standard Cool White lighting on third quarter absences of grades two and four at Bay City Public Schools, Bay City, Michigan.

GREEN STREET SCHOOL BRATTLEBORO, VERMONT

A study of absences was conducted at this elementary school by Wayne P. London (The Lancet, November 21, 1987). It was shown that in classrooms with standard fluorescent lighting, the rate of absences increased significantly from September-December to January-June period but, in comparison, the rate of absences in classrooms with Vita-Lite full-spectrum lighting fell slightly.

Case Histories

NOECKER SCHOOL - ROSELAND N.J.

Instead of standard fluorescents, Vita-Lite was installed in two special education rooms at the Lester C. Noecker School, Roseland, N. J.: Speech Room #9, Kathryn Snogans, teacher; and Special Education Room #7, C.L. Charpentier, teacher.

Comments from speech teacher Snogans were that mere were, fewer shadows and less glare in the room, with less squinting during reading by both students and teacher. Improved color vision was noted, producing naturalistic skin tones.

Special ed. teacher Charpentier immediately noted that the classroom lighting appeared brighter, compared to the previous standard lighting and the standard lighting in other classrooms of the school. There were fewer shadows and less glare in the classroom, especially less glare on the computer screen.

Commenting on a particular visually impaired child,
Charpentier stated, "He could now work anywhere hi the room - materials did not have to be placed under the VTek (video magnifier) machine for light enhancement with the new lighting. In addition, student attendance unproved, and I prefer this lighting system to the previous ones," she concluded.

    DOVER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - VERMONT

Dover Elementary school, in Dover (Vermont) replaced standard fluorescent lamps with Vita-Lite full spectrum lamps. Teachers reported positive reactions from pupils, parents and visitors alike. There was a decrease in the rate of absenteeism in classrooms lighted with Vita-Lite.

Principal Frank Varra commented, "Vita-Lite has transformed the inside light of our classrooms and has changed the whole atmosphere throughout our school. Before Vita-Lite there were shadows on student desks and blackboards, but no more. When the children returned from summer vacation, they noticed the difference right away and students whose classrooms had the old lighting started asking for Vita-Lite. In my 29 years of working in education, I never heard a child mention lighting before."

    "LIGHTING SMART"
    FOR SCHOOLS

Statistical analysis of data from the Edmonton schools showed the enhanced Vita-Lite classroom environment did yield the significantly positive student performance results over the Cool White classroom.

Factors that enhance the Vita-Lite classroom environment are:
    • Vita-Lite simulates full spectrum natural light.
    • Vita-Lite closely matches the balanced full color and ultraviolet spectrum of daylight.
    • Vita-Lite produces the same full-spectrum color temperature as that of 5500K natural light Cool White is 4200K.
    • Vita-Lite has a color rendering index of 91 (natural light has an index of 100) which allows for high color rendition, contrast and matching. Cool White's color rendering index is 62.
    • Vita-Lite reduces glare on book pages, paper and VDT screens, making reading easier; figures, graphs and fine prints are more distinct.
    • Vita-Lite reveals details and colors accurately, improving color matching, color contrast and color rendering, as well as improving black and white contrast and, thus improving seeability and visual clarity.
